29.S I PADMAVATHI CARDIOLOGIST (1917-2020)

      Here is an inspiring story of the first female cardiologist of India, who achieved so much by returning to her country. Tamilnadu & India should be mighty proud of their daughter- Sivaramakrishna Iyer Padmavathi!   In the year 1917, a Tamil Indian girl was born in a middle-class family in Rangoon, Burma, where her father had gone for a living. He named her Sivaramakrishna Iyer Padmavathi. At a time when women were traditionally confined to the kitchen/illiterate, the middle-class girl did MBBS from Rangoon Medical College.   When the Japanese invaded Burma, they briefly returned to their traditional home in Coimbatore. In 1949, she went to London to do an FRCP, then unimaginable for a Female Indian doctor. She was selected to study further at Johns Hopkins University, US, where she trained under the legendary cardiologist Helen Taussig. 28.Shakunthala A Bhagath(1933-2012)

    Shakunthala  A Bhagath , probably India’s  first Civil  Engineer was  instrumental  in designing 69 bridges   from Kashmir to Arunachal  Pradesh.  Together  with   her  husband A  Bhagath , they have constructed more than 200  bridges all over the world including  USA  UK and Germany under the  banner  Quadricorn, a bridge  construction  company set up by them. Shakuntala Bhagat    Joshi  was born on 6 February 1933 – died 14 October 2012), was known to be one of the earliest  woman civil engineers in India. Shakuntala Joshi was the daughter of bridge engineer S. B.     Anuradha  T K   is a  Senior  Scientist  Engineer  retired  from   Indian  Space Research Organization who was with ISRO for 34 years and was  the first woman to be the Director of a Satellite projects GSA-10  and GSAT-12. Born  on 30 th   April 1960 in Bangalore India  she  graduated  from University Visvesawarayya  College  of Engg in Electronics and Communication  Engineering . About her choice of   education and career   she says : “I never liked subjects where I needed to remember a lot and science looked logical to me. I don’t believe that Indian girls think science is not meant for them and I think maths is their favourite subject."
